Do you sometimes need to say goodbye?
It’s a fine line we walk when
we enter into friendship.
Once beyond a cordial reckoning,
past the gates of acceptance,
we are bound by the expectation
of being supported, even, and especially,
in times of the greatest stupidity.
Which is a tidy pact, easy to endorse,
foolishness being so universally common,
and dependable. And yet, a matter never
discussed at the forming of the treaty,
is that of lines being crossed, and boundaries
being breached. Things of no importance,
until they are of great importance.
It is often said that in times of great
personal disarray, we find out who our
friends really are. It’s worth remembering
they find out who we really are as well.
