When I was five
I had to give a speech
before the entire school.
I stepped up to the stage
in my Sunday best,
unconcerned,
I did not yet know
that I was being judged.
The next time I spoke
before others,
my audience
had been reduced
to a single classroom,
and I could barely breathe.
